    • Knowledge and experience to apply to their own practice of the profession to advance professional goals and aspirations

    • Knowledge, understanding, and participation in broader health care issues impacting health care delivery and the nursing profession
  • Why did you start teaching?

    I had a strong interest in advancing the nursing profession by contributing to the education of future nurses. Given my particular interest and passion for the older adult population, I wanted to use my knowledge and experiences to help educate future nurses on the unique opportunities and challenges of caring for an aging population.

  • What drew you to the field in which you teach?

    My passion for the older adult population, coupled with my leadership experience in health care, provided a unique opportunity to utilize my education and experience to lend real-life experiences to the classroom. The core courses I teach include Adult Health Nursing, Pharmacology, Management, and Leadership in Nursing and Health Care, and Health Care Policy.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the field in which you teach?

    Some of the essential qualities that make someone particularly successful in the field I teach include critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, professionalism and professional integrity, effective decision-making skills, collaboration and teamwork, and a positive attitude to remain adaptive, flexible, and proactive to the needs and challenges of health care delivery as well as the populations we serve.

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge in the field in which you teach today?

    As the global environment continues to evolve and challenge health care delivery in many ways, the need to balance our needs with the needs of the profession are important considerations for nurses. Additionally, preparing and positioning the profession for the current and future needs of health care delivery requires an ongoing commitment to lifelong learning and professional development to meet our responsibilities.

  • What advice would you give to those considering a USM online program?

    The format and structure of the course in an asynchronous model provide the flexibility and adaptability needed to balance life, work, and school while maximizing the opportunity to gain valuable learning experiences in nursing and health care.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

    "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande
